For the past six months, I have been interning at the Albertus Magnus College Communications and Marketing department in a public relations capacity. The other interns and I, three of whom are graduating seniors this coming May, attended the Quinnipiac Women’s Networking Luncheon to work on our networking skills and also form some connections with other women in the various industries that we are interested in.

The keynote speaker was Patricia E. Reilly, a lawyer who also teaches sexual harassment classes, particularly in the workplace. I have taken a sexual harassment course previously at the Legislative Internship Program in Hartford, CT, however I learned more through her perspective as a lawyer who frequently works on these kinds of workplace harassment cases. It’s imperative to know my rights as a woman, especially one who is about to enter the workforce. It’s unfortunate that this problem exists, but in the era of #MeToo I feel encouraged to stand up for myself and report inappropriate behavior.
After the keynote speaker, I was introduced to a woman named Samantha, who owns her own business in content communications strategy and professional writing. She was very interested to know about my work as an Albertus intern. I spoke with her about my recent work drafting press releases with our Media Relations Specialist and contributing blog posts. I’m so glad I was able to make a successful connection with someone who works in my field of study. After the keynote speech, we also attended a business expo. where we were able to network with businesses across Connecticut.
In attendance was “The Marketing Intern Squad” (as we call ourselves), consisting of: Alyssa Cruz ‘19, a Graphic Design major, who recently won a PRSA Chapter award for managing the “Coffee with the President” video series. Kristin O’Sullivan ‘19, also a Graphic Design major, who shadows our Creative Director and creates designs for College events. And Paige Williams ‘20, a Communications major and department assistant. She is interested in a career in broadcasting and journalism.
I’m so grateful for the opportunity to attend these events. I feel that I have gained indispensable experiences during my time here, while also being able to practically apply all that I have learned during my time in the classroom at Albertus Magnus College.

Alicia Weaver ‘19 is a senior graduating with a B.A. in Communications with a minor in Political Science. She is an intern in the Communications and Marketing department at Albertus Magnus College and hopes to pursue a career in public relations. Alicia has previously interned for Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro and State Representative Liz Linehan. She is passionate about women’s rights and is active in politics.
