Scripture:
“For gracious and merciful is God, slow to anger, rich in kindness, and relenting in punishment.”Joel 2:13
Reflection:
Choose Kindness is the Albertus theme for Lent this year. The Gospel reading from Matthews presents an invitation to be aware, to reflect and to act with kindness in how we are in right relationship with ourselves, with others and with God.
“Take care not to perform righteous deeds in order that people may see them.” Choose to be kind from the widening of our hearts to the need of the other, expecting no attention or reward.
“When you give alms, do not blow a trumpet before you…”
Choose to be kind to others from the generosity of our hearts, giving of our time and resources from our abundance and even from our need.
“When you pray, go to your inner room, close the door, and pray to your God in secret.” Choose to be kind in prayer by taking time to be with God so the still, quiet voice may fill us with wisdom, insight and expanding love.
Practice:
The invitation of Lent to deepen our spiritual life and to become more generous and loving to all, leads to greater freedom and peace on our life’s journey. To accept this invitation, we must set aside time and give priority to God, who desires to be in a deeper relationship with us, and to the needs of our neighbor.
