Becoming a New York City Police Officer was not a career choice of mine. In 2004, my godfather and his partner were killed in the line of duty. Though I’ve always admired the job, I knew the possible dangers firsthand. In 2011, I began my journey at Albertus, declaring my major in criminal justice. I remember Professor Geary talking about the NYPD, that was when he was on the job. I always took an interest, and we compared stories. Going into my senior year at Albertus we needed to find internships. In 2014, I worked at the NYPD Headquarters for the summer, where my supervisor suggested I take the police exam. During my two-month internship I met phenomenal police officers who were so passionate about their service; it always stuck with me. Also, during this internship, I was privileged to visit the Police Academy that was being built for future police officers. This is where life came full circle. The end of 2016, I received a call for the opportunity to become a NYPD police officer since I passed the exam that my supervisor suggested.
Who knew the Police Academy I visited during my internship, three years later, would be where I spent six months of training. On December 28, 2017, I graduated and swore to protect and serve the City of New York to the best of my ability. Albertus led me to people who reminded and reassured me why my godfather stayed on the job for 23 years. It influenced me, and I couldn’t be more proud of my career choice as a New York City Police Officer.
