Distance Learning in the Criminal Justice Program | Alumni Spotlight

The M.S. in Criminal Justice program (MSCJ) is a 33 credit graduate program designed to enable students who have completed an appropriate undergraduate degree to engage in advanced study in Criminal Justice. The program offers two unique concentrations: correctional administration and juvenile justice. The development of more holistic approaches to addressing these challenges requires the expertise of criminal justice professionals with the knowledge and skills necessary to understand and implement effective strategies.

Hello, my name is Edward F. Souza-Quinn, and I just recently completed the MSCJ Program with Albertus Magnus College as a distance learning student. Because of the ability to partake in classes online, Albertus Magnus College and their online program afforded me the opportunity to participate in furthering my education.

I am a 38-year-old Combat Veteran and proud father of two beautiful girls. I am currently employed with the State of Connecticut Department of Correction as a Lieutenant. I currently have 13 years of service and look to further my advancement within the department. Being a father of two and working full time, you can imagine how hard it is to attend college. Upon learning about the MSCJ Program at Albertus Magnus College, I was immediately intrigued. I entered the program with the goal of first, successfully completing the program, secondly, using the degree and knowledge gained to advance within the Department of Correction, and lastly, to maintain employment upon retirement from the Department and become a Criminal Justice educator.

With the successful completion of the program, I intend to graduate this September. What I received from the MSCJ Program is the comfort and knowledge of where the current climate of corrections is heading and where it came from. As a supervisor in the Department of Correction, I am more aware of the critical issues we are faced with when dealing with offenders and staff as it pertains to their legal rights and custody. Also, I feel better educated in applying theory and ethical principles when making decisions while understanding the legality of those decisions within the capacity of my profession. Current correctional practices have reformed dramatically to now encompass Community Corrections and Reentry Programming. Reentry programming allows the offender to rehabilitate through institutional and community programming, with the goal of becoming a successful contributing member of the community again. Successful reentry not only reduces recidivism, but saves tax payers dollars, and most importantly, increases public safety.

This program has helped prepare me to comfortably assume the many leadership positions within the Department. I am extremely happy I chose this program and I’d like to express my most sincere thanks to the Professors, Administrators, and Staff at Albertus Magnus College, who supported my vision and allowed me to become successful. Most importantly, to Professor John Lawrie, who pushed me and motivated me to completion. Without Professor Lawrie, I’m not sure I’d be able proudly say, “I DID IT!”

Whether learning is done in the classroom, online, or a blend of both, Albertus is a Veteran-friendly culture where VA benefits are maximized and student success is ensured. Learn more about Veteran Educational Benefits.
