Albertus Students Complete Summer Internships | Part 1

The Department of Career and Professional Services at Albertus Magnus College helps students in developing, evaluating and implementing a career and professional development plan. Gaining ‘real world’ experience is incredibly important in understanding your coursework on a practical level. The workforce has changed drastically in response to the COVID-19 Pandemic, and our students are adapting to these new guidelines, completing their summer internships remotely, in-person, or in a blended format.

“Experiential learning is through the experience of “doing”, with hands on applications and problem solving, inside and outside the classroom. These experiences improve student success in terms of graduation rates and achieving post-graduation goals for further education and career development.” Dr. Hilda Speicher, Coordinator of the Center for Teaching and Learning Excellence

Meet a few Albertus undergraduate students who are taking their classroom knowledge into the workforce.

Rochelle Furino, Class of 2021

Rochelle’s internship is fully remote, where she takes part in department projects and makes connections in her field.

Rochelle is entering into her senior year at Albertus Magnus College, graduating in May of 2021 with a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice. She is currently interning with the Connecticut State Department of Consumer Protection.

“This internship has opened my eyes to other possibilities in the criminal justice field. I use both critical thinking and problem solving when I am trying to investigate a case and I am able to work well with the other individuals on my team.”

Jonathan Beaucejour, Class of 2021

With a blended internship, Jonathan works partially onsite and virtually from home.

The Connecticut Grounds Keepers Association (CGKA) is a not for profit organization who serves landscaping firms and their allied manufacturers and distributors. As a major in Business Management, Jonathan was interested in an internship where he could take part in all aspects of the job.

Jonathan works closely with Liam Ohlmann, the Executive Director and an Albertus Magnus College graduate.

During his time as an intern, Jonathan has been attending Board of Directors meetings for the Association, working on membership lists, and spending time visiting sites and shadowing business managers.

Lindsay Ciarlone, Class of 2021

“I can use every skill I have learned here and apply it to my career. I am eager to start the next steps to acquire my future career.”

Lindsay began her internship at Spencer Hill Communications in the midst of the COVID-19 Pandemic. Despite this, she has been hard at work honing her skill sets. With a blended approach, Lindsay was able to join the office online and onsite. She will be graduating in 2021 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Management with a concentration in Marketing.

“During the course of my internship, I have learned the ins and outs of sales. I have overcome cold calling rejection and succeeded in cultivating a list of new customers and clients for the company. I have attended many online meetings to learn new products, programs and sales techniques to improve my sales skills and to gain revenue for the company. I have seen so much growth in myself ever since starting my internship.”

Austin Smith, Class of 2021

“I have learned a lot with this internship. It has helped me grow as a graphic designer and has given me a good feel of the work involved.”

Austin Smith is entering into his final semester of college, graduating in December of 2021 with a Bachelor of Arts in Graphic Design. During the summer Austin applied for an internship at Murphy Distributors, a local beverage wholesaler. With his wealth of technical knowledge, he quickly became a part of the team.

“My internship is in graphic design. I have gained a lot of experience with industry technology and I knew how to use all the programs they needed me to use, like Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign.”

From his internship, Austin was offered a full time position at the company and will begin working after graduation.
