In commitment to our Four Dominican Pillars, Albertus Magnus College took part in its 3rd annual Service Day. On Saturday, April 17th, students, faculty, and staff from the College came out to participate in a community outdoor cleanup, an activity that was both COVID safe and allowed for folks to enjoy the new Spring weather!
Participants were able to serve the outdoor needs of our Albertus community, as well as work on sites in the greater New Haven area. We were able to partner with organizations such as the Springs Learning Center, the Dominican Sister of Peace Residences, Amistad Catholic Worker Center, St. Martin de Porres Church, and the city of Hamden by working on sections of the Farmington Canal Trail. We had the privilege of cleaning up the grounds of these centers and locations, and also took time to learn more about them and how their work affects us.
Albertus community members were able to reflect on their encounter with their site groups and got to share in their experiences of learning beyond the classroom. Every year we hear stories of how happy our participants were to be there and how much they enjoyed their experience of service. To quote one student after a long morning of work, “this was the best day ever.”
Service Day is one that allows our community to take action and live out our Pillar of Service. As a community dedicated to serving the common good, we are grateful to have opportunities like this to engage with the larger world outside of our campus. Inspired by our Albertus mission, service empowers students, faculty, and staff to build an intentional life through learning, action, and reflection. May Service Day be one small way we are able to give our passions, talents, and abilities joyfully to a world in need.
