On February 24, 2021, the Albertus Magnus College Criminal Justice Program partnered with the Department of Foreign Languages. Through the collaboration, students hosted a virtual discussion exploring the intersection of cultural fluency and community policing. During the forum, two Connecticut State Troopers discussed their deployment to Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria devastated the island on September 20, 2017.
Sergeant Alessandro Giannone and Trooper First Class Juan Morales explained the logistical challenges associated with the post-hurricane relief efforts. They also highlighted the importance of good communication skills, intercultural fluency, and service to others. Interestingly, the Troopers’ reflections aligned with the significance of our College’s general education requirements, the National Association of Colleges and Employer’s (NACE) core competencies, and our four Dominican Pillars.
This forum gave the students a real-world example solidifying the value of a Liberal Arts education!
