Alexandra James graduated from Albertus Magnus College in the Spring of 2020 with a B.A. in Sociology. Coming into her undergraduate college experience, she had her mind set on social work. Taking her “Research Methods” and “Minorities and Diversity” courses with Professor Yeaman were some of her favorite subjects. It was in this program that she learned more about her field of study and its immediate real-world applications.
Every aspect of the social world is a part of studying Sociology, including topics such as marriage and family, roles at work, gender roles, social inequality, public policy, criminology, attitude development, and more. Albertus’ liberal arts, experiential approach to academic programming gave Alexandra not only a foundation, but provided opportunities to take her classroom knowledge out into the community.
“I started my internship at the Ulbrich Boys & Girls Club in January. I had just completed an internship at the Kennedy Center the previous Spring. Albertus prepared me well for the career world. I learned how to compose my resume and how to present myself in an interview,” she said.
After graduation, Alexandra was asked to continue her work at the Ulbrich Boys & Girls Club and was promoted from her internship to a full-time position. Now as a Unit Director for the North Haven branch, she coordinates programs for youth groups, ages 6-12 years old.
A liberal arts degree from Albertus involves experiential learning curriculum that helps students polish classroom learning and adapt it to real-world skills that employers value. Despite a global pandemic and economic downturn, students like Alexandra still continue to soar and impact their communities.
Alexandra already is looking toward the future; a Masters degree in Human Services.
“I’m hoping that this second degree will open even more doors and allow me to work with youth on a deeper level,” she explained.
