On Saturday, April 27, 2019, we celebrated the members of the Golden Society and the induction of the class of 1969. The Albertus Magnus College Golden Society recognizes alumnae who have graduated 50 or more years ago.

In attendance was alumna Elizabeth (Betty) Hurley Candels ’48, who was celebrating her 71st Reunion. Ms. Candels has been a very active member of the Albertus community. In the late 1960s during a controversial time in Albertus history, with student strikes and suspensions, she served as President of the Alumnae Association advocating for current students. From 1977-1980, she served as the alumni representative on the College’s Board of Trustees. Betty was also named Alumnae of the Year in 1976 for her loyalty and service to the College.
During her time as a student at Albertus, Betty was Business Manager for the student newspaper, Silver Horn, during its inaugural year. She was also Secretary, and later President, for the College’s Glee Club. Betty met her husband, pediatrician Lothar Candels, during her time at Albertus during a joint Glee Club concert with Fordham University.
