September 5 – December 12, 2014
After visiting London on the first day of our trip and after having my last German final at the end of our program, I’ve noticed a great shift in my life. Throughout my time in the “Universität of Salzburg,” I was able to realize the differences between not only my country but every other country within Europe. I’ll start by listing the places I’ve visited within these past 3 ½ months (in order).
- United Kingdom (London)
- Austria (Salzburg and Vienna)
- Switzerland (Zurich)
- Czech Republic (Drahotin)
- Spain (Malaga)
- France (Paris)
- Ireland (Dublin, Derry, and Belfast)
- The Netherlands (Amsterdam)
- Germany (Munich, Cologne, Bruschal, Bonn, and Hechingen)
Each country is unique in its own way. For example, Switzerland’s chocolate is the best in the entire world! (Personal opinion) and their German dialect is different from the Austrians and the Germans. Second example, in Malaga, Spain, the culture has many points of pride. Luckily, my Spaniard friends were able to give me a tour, and because of that I understand why their food was so delicious … but not quite like the French. In Paris, the food was rich and had many special ingredients that made it one of the best countries to wine and dine in.
Before studying abroad many people have told me that I was going to have an experience like no other, and I think they were right. Even now while still in Europe for Christmas and perhaps New Year’s, I’m astonished by seeing morning text messages from friends I’ve made in all nine different countries! I’ve traveled more than all my friends have in Europe and back at home combined. I guess the root of all this traveling and learning German was back in 2009 when I first made an appearance in Germany, which changed my life. Now, I was able to see friends and my first Host family after being away for 5 years. Now that was one of the highlights of my many trips.
I’ve decided to go back home on New Year’s Eve and surprise my family on the count down (they think I’ll be in Paris). I have also decided to present to the entire Albertus community for experiential learning day in order to spread knowledge of my trip and open up opportunities for others. Well, this is my second and final blog till my arrival back at Albertus. As the Germans say, Auf Wiedersehen! (Good Bye)
