Albertus Student Self-Publishes First Book During First Year

Ryan Ziaks, an Albertus Magnus College student part of the Centennial Class, is not wasting any time getting started on his career goals.

During his first year at Albertus, Ryan self-published his book “Brother’s Keeper.” The story takes place in a crime-ridden city and centers around family drama between two brothers after a family tragedy.

As Ryan was figuring out where to start in the publishing process, he saw a social media post on @albertussocial, spotlighting English Professor Sarah Wallman. She had recently published a series of short stories titled “Senseless Women” along with many other publications throughout her career.

Although Ryan had not experienced a class with Professor Wallman yet, the aspiring English major decided to reach out to her.

“She gave me a lot of guidance with the way that she approached publishing. She even gave advice with fonts and what kind of colors to use on the cover.”

Ryan doesn’t stop here when it comes to giving credit. He also credits Amanda Stetson ‘23, a tutor in the Germain Center and member of the Breakwater committee, for reviewing the piece in its entirety.

“We went through every chapter of the book together. She’s taught me a ton and helped me grow as a writer.”

Ryan is also thankful for Cooper Roche ‘24, who designed the cover of the book.

“It’s a tight-knit community here, so I was happy to utilize those resources to help publish the book.”

It’s no surprise that Ryan plans to study English, but he is considering incorporating the study of communications into his degree as well. He is always seeking out opportunities to be creative.

“I feel like creativity is just a culmination of things that have inspired you throughout your life.”

One of those sources of inspiration for Ryan’s writing is his favorite films, such as those by Denis Villeneuve (Dune and BladeRunner 2049). He also has an interest in Christopher Nolan’s films.

Ryan may have 3 years left at Albertus, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t already thinking about the career possibilities after graduation. He has interests in writing, directing, and even acting.

“I want to see where this takes me. I want to continue to write and share my passions with people and I hope that they reciprocate that and enjoy my work.”

His advice for his fellow students who want to publish their own work someday? Never give up.

“I know the writing process can be really hard for people, but just stick with it, even if it’s just a sentence a day, just keep pursuing it even when it can be frustrating.”

Ryan is continuing to write, and is in the process of publishing his second book! “The Cosmic Protectors” is currently an e-book and will soon be available as a paperback book.
