Third Sunday of Lent

Scripture

“And hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.” Romans 5:5

Reflection

In the Gospel today we hear about the encounter of Jesus and the Samaritan woman. What is remarkable about this exchange is that in the time of Jesus it would be unusual to have such an encounter between a Jew and a Samaritan. However, as we know, Jesus was not interested in the origin of those he met along his way, but in their journey of faith.

We see this journey of faith unfold in the Samaritan woman. In her response to Jesus she is intent on providing water to quench his human thirst. On the other hand, Jesus is talking about the “living water” to quench the spiritual thirst of this woman. As the questions and dialogue continue, Jesus helps the woman recognize the truth about herself, experience Jesus as prophet and savior and begin her role as one who brings the “good news” of Jesus to others.

What we witness in this Gospel account is a journey of hope in the “living water” provided by Jesus, faith in the one who brings her new life and a desire to share this journey with others.

Practice

This week, following the example of the Samaritan woman, bring words of hope and faith to others who struggle with despair and uncertainty in their life journey. Be the “springs of living water”.
