Monday, May 25, 2020 marks the start of Module 5 for our Post Graduate Studies (PGS) students. On this day the country will also celebrate Memorial Day.
This holiday is much more than just a three-day weekend where we have off from work. In fact, this holiday is not intended to be a celebration; it is a day of remembrance and mourning for all those who lost their lives while serving our country. Today, more than ever, we need to remember and honor not only those who lost their lives serving in our military, but those who have lost their lives in the line of duty fighting the COVID-19 global pandemic.
This is a new type of war we are fighting and a new form of veteran will emerge once we overcome this tragedy. Memorial Day began as a response to the Civil War where 620,000 Americans died. The holiday was originally known as “Decoration Day” due to the practice of decorating graves with flowers, wreaths, and flags. On Memorial Day it is customary to fly the flag at half-staff until noon, then raise it to the top until sunset. Enjoy the day off responsibly, remember why we have the day off, and honor both military veterans and healthcare workers fighting to keep our country safe. God Bless America!
