Spring Break is officially here (for Albertus Magnus College, this year it’s March 12–March 20), and because you have been working so hard all semester, you definitely deserve the academic time off. So with a full week of having no classes, what are you going to do with yourself?
We have some ideas!
Travel. The quintessential spring break activity is traveling. If you have the budget for a vacation, this is a wonderful way to spend the time away. There are many online travel sites that offer deals for visiting anywhere in the world. Forbes recently published an article on “Where to Find the Best Travel Deals in 2016,” which you can find here. You may also want to check out StudentUniverse, which caters directly to student travelers in particular.
Volunteer. Many students like to volunteer over Spring Break because not only does it feel good to give back and help others, it can also earn you academic credit. Of course, it looks fantastic on a résumé too. Contact the Albertus Office of Dominican Ministries or visit the Albertus Community Service page for opportunities. You can also search online through sites like VolunteerMatch.
Do you want to travel while you change the world? Voluntourism is a great site for students who are looking to do just that. Here are some more examples of ways you can give back while taking your own vacation.
Complement your education. Just because you aren’t in class that week doesn’t mean you can’t do anything to further your education. During Spring Break you have time to do all of the career prep you haven’t been able to do. For example, use the time to start seeking and applying for internships or going to local job fairs and networking events. With your days off, perhaps you can find an opportunity to shadow a professional in your prospective field and/or set up an informational interview.
Catch up. Make a list of all of the things you have wanted to do, but haven’t had time for. For example, has your laundry piled up or have you been meaning to make that dentist appointment? Do it during break and return to school with a sense of accomplishment and a shorter to-do list.
Rest. No one says you have to do something extraordinary during your week off; sometimes you just need a break. You’ve been working hard this semester, and all the others before it, so take some time for yourself. Maybe there is a great book you haven’t been able to finish because you’re too busy with homework or a television show you couldn’t watch because your Business Management class is scheduled during that time. It’s okay, go ahead and relax — don’t feel bad, you deserve it.
What suggestions do you have for keeping busy (or not) over Spring Break?
No matter how you spend your time, make the best of it and enjoy your time off!
