Student-Budget Friendly Places to Eat in New Haven

woman-eating-saladNew Haven is known for being a culinary mecca, and with such a wide variety of restaurants, there is something for every taste — even on a student budget. We’ve asked some local foodies about where they go when they want a big, delicious meal for just a little money. Here’s what they told us:

Mamoun’s: Best known for its falafel, Mamoun’s was established in 1971 in Greenwich Village, New York City. Today there are six locations, one of which is at 85 Howe Street in New Haven. The restaurant’s success has much to do with the fact that in over forty years, the owners have adhered to their philosophy of serving fresh, made-from-scratch authentic Middle Eastern cuisine in a traditional environment. Also, being open until 3am every day and offering their renowned falafel for $3.50 has earned Mamoun’s tens of thousands of loyal (and satisfied) customers.

Claire’s Cornucopia: MSNBC has deemed Claire’s as “One of the 10 best heart-healthy restaurants in America.” The menu offers vegetarian, vegan, cholesterol-free, and gluten-free options, and the chefs will prepare your meal per any specific dietary needs. While most fully organic, vegetarian restaurants have costly (and tiny) entrees, almost everything on Claire’s menu is under $10 and large enough to fill you up (and then some). The one thing you won’t find on the menu is meat, but Claire’s offerings are so delicious that even the most avid meat-eater won’t miss it.

Ivy Wok (previously Ivy Noodle): For the last fifteen years, this authentic noodle house has been a landmark in New Haven’s Broadway Shopping District. The restaurant is so popular that the owners recently remodeled it to accommodate a greater number of in-house diners. Most dishes at Ivy Work are under $8, and they offer a wide variety of meats, vegetables and of course, noodles. Open until 2 am every night but Sunday, Ivy Work is a great place to visit whenever your hunger hits.

Tomatillo makes every day Taco Tuesday. All menu items are all-natural, local and authentic, and most cost under $10. You can order something directly from the menu or create your own dish from numerous ingredients. Tomatillo is conveniently located in the Broadway Shopping District, but if you’re craving Mexican and want to stay in, the restaurant delivers to some areas. “Taco-bout” an awesome option.

Food Trucks have become really popular in the last few years and the Elm City has some excellent ones. There are trucks for Indian food, Mexican food, grilled cheese, pizza, cookies and donuts. Pretty much anything you want can be found on wheels. Check out this link for information on what trucks are out there and where you can find them.

No matter what you’re craving, you’ll find something within your budget at one of the fantastic restaurants in downtown New Haven. Where do you go when you when you want great food for a reasonable price?
