Times are tough; there’s no doubt about that. And while you really want to go back to college, you might be worried about paying for it. On the other hand, you understand the financial rewards of furthering your education, and that is one of the reasons you want to return. So, what should you do? Fortunately, there are many financial aid options available that can make getting that degree a reality.
Before anything else, complete your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Next, contact your Financial Aid Office and set up an appointment. Counselors are on hand to point you in the right direction when seeking financial aid, as well as answer any questions you may have. In addition, Albertus Magnus College has partnered with American Student Assistance to bring you an interactive financial literacy tool known as SALT that you may find helpful in all aspects of your life. With these resources, figuring out how to afford going back to school will no longer be overwhelming. In fact, not only will you have the means for paying tuition, you’ll also have a plan for keeping yourself out of debt while doing so.
Also, just because you are a working adult, don’t overlook scholarships and grants. While you’re at the Financial Aid Office, check out the financial aid bulletin board and “Scholarship” book. When you take the time to go through the book, you are sure to find offers that apply to you. Also, once you sign into your myAlbertus portal, click the Financial Aid Services tab (top right side), and then click the Alternative Financing link (left side) for a list of updated scholarships and their links. Believe it or not, your working experience may actually help you pay for college. Many employers not only offer scholarships, but also tuition remission, which means they pay your class fees as long as you earn above a specified grade (usually a B). Why would they do this? Well, as we said above, the new skills and knowledge you’ll acquire when you return to school will also benefit your employer. If you do go this route, however, make sure to read the agreement carefully. Many businesses require that you stay at that company for a specified amount of time after graduation if you take tuition remission. Consequently, if you are looking to change jobs, this may not be your best option, but if you are looking to grow within your own company, it is a fantastic deal.
Are you a veteran? As a thank you for your service, we have made applying for financial aid easier than it has ever been. We are also extremely proud to participate in the GI Yellow Ribbon Program.
