Below you will find an interview conducted by current Albertus Art student Rebecca Weinberger of Steve Sangapore ’13, who has been successfully exhibiting his work across the nation.
Name: Steve Sangapore
Year Graduated: 2013
Major: Graphic Design, Studio Art , Minor: Music
Masters Degree: No
What are you doing that is art related: Exhibiting and publishing work nationally, working as a design and production associate at Madavor Media Publishing in the Boston area. Freelance graphic design.
How Albertus has helped you further you art career: The tremendous resource of having the professors was a big advantage for me. I received a formal education in history and contemporary work, which helped me to understand the world we see today, as well as where I and my work fit in. I still maintain a correspondence with my professors and am still learning and being guided in the direction of opportunity. The four years I spent there was a period of severe and rapid growth and development. An education, like anything else, will be largely what you make it.
What would you tell future art students of Albertus: Everyone reaches the point of personal epiphany in the context of their future, their path personally and professionally, and who they are as a working piece in society’s infinite dynamism. When this takes place is a product of circumstance, not necessarily a conscious choice. Learn to balance the embracing nature of making great college memories with absorbing a great education. Do what you are passionate about, and if you are not sure… look for it. The indulgences in the here and now often bring pleasure, but intellectual fulfillment through passion and craft produces joy. Both are necessary for leading a subjectively dignified and rich life.
What was your favorite thing about Albertus: Albertus is a small, connected community of individuals. Personally, the most important thing was the professors and the quality of the relationships with them… which in turn makes the education even stronger. I have had an excellent experience with the faculty and have received an education that I will use and cherish forever. During my time at Albertus, as well as after graduation, I have kept strong relationships with some of my professors. We stay in touch, and I am still learning and exploring new opportunities with them.
